Using hot rollers is very simple. All you have to do is to divide your hair into sections, roll your hair around the rollers and, when they are all cooled off, take them out. We made more detailed and very simple step by step guide here.
Hot Rollers, if they’re used carelessly or too often, can damage your hair with heat or tension. That means they’re not good — but the risk of long term damage can be offset by careful use. If you’re curious to find out how to protect your hair from possible damage click here.
Hot Rollers have to stay in until all of them cooled off.

We’ve made a hand-picked list of top 6 hot rollers for short hair. The list is based on our author’s objective review and combination of various opinions from users all over the world. Continue reading to see all of our hot roller reviews:
1. Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium Roller Setter
This gorgeous kit comes with a big container that is both holder and heater for 20 velvety flocked rollers in three sizes six medium (1″), eight substantial (1¼”) and six little (¾”). The kit also includes 20 butterfly clips, and 20 color-coded metal clips and that is about everything you need to make the curling job as easy as possible. The rollers are heated with the infrared warmth that when applied on your hair enters from the inside and gives you fast and harmless curled hairstyle.
The container comes with On/Off switch and indicator light that are quite important safety features. Even though there is heat involved in curling Babyliss rollers are very gentle on hair, yet capable of creating really durable curls that can last a whole day. The container heats up the rollers almost immediately which are convenient for those in hurry.
2. Conair Infinity Pro Instant Heat Flocked Rollers
Infused with Ceramic technology for consistent heat transfer, Conair Infinity Pro heats instantly and it is ready to make gorgeous waves in just 5 minutes. Manufacturers say that it heats up in even less than that, 85 seconds to be precise, but that just isn’t true. And even if something did heat up that quickly, can you imagine what it would do to your hair?
The kit comes with 20 perfectly weighted rollers in four different sizes (jumbo, large, medium, and small) which allow you to be creative with your curly hairstyles. You can also find 20 easy-to-use Super Clips in the kit that make the curling process a lot easier.
My favorite thing about these hot rolls is that the container has 12 heat settings to choose from and they all heat up quickly. This way you can adjust the heat to your hair type and curl it perfectly without damaging it. It also comes with a safety feature that shuts the heat off after the rollers have been turned on for 60 minutes.
3. Calista Tools Ion Hot Rollers
These relatively small sized rollers are great for creating curls on shorter hair lengths while also being practical to store or carry in a suitcase when traveling. The small holder and heater heat 12 rollers in as little as three to five minutes, which means that, yes, you will be able to create beautiful curls in the morning before going to work. This works that quickly because unlike other hot roller sets, Calista Tools rollers don’t heat up only in the base, but have the heating element inside of it. But that’s not all! Each roller is infused with special mineral powders that help it hold heat more efficiently, which is basically the famous ion technology.
To sum up, if the speed is what you are looking for, this should be your next hot roller kit.
4. Remington Silk Ceramic Heated Clip Setter
The kit includes twenty velvety rollers in two different sizes (1-inch, 1¼-inch) that provide salon-quality curls. Each roller comes with the heated clip that is a part of Dual Heating Technology. That means that the clip heats the curl on the outside while the roller heats it on the inside. Rollers also have increased ceramic content that seals your hair against humidity and static to prevent frizz effect and create long-lasting curls.
The container features bright indicator LED light that light up when the rollers are heated, and that usually takes five to ten minutes, even though manufacturers say 90 seconds.
The rollers are so easy to put in and they work very fast, so you won’t need more than ten minutes to curl your hair (after the rollers are heated).
The only downside is that those clips aren’t really the best holders. If your hair is thick it will fall out, but since those clips are part of that Dual Heating Technology, they aren’t really replaceable. If you can’t manage the clip to hold your hair strains, try using some heat resistant hairpins, because, other than this, the rollers are fantastic.
5. T3 Micro Voluminous Hot Rollers Luxe Hair Roller
This set of hot rollers creates voluminous or soft waves on shoulder length hair and it is the easiest way to create a bouncy effect like you would get with a salon blowout. The set comes with eight velvet-wrapped rollers in two sizes (1.5 inches and 1.75 inches) including eight clips.
It includes two heat settings, which is really important for those with fine hair, and even though there isn’t a wide range of different heat levels, this is better than nothing. Low heat setting goes up to 221 degrees while the high one goes up to 248 degrees. Not a huge difference, but it is something.
Each roller contains a ceramic heater and aluminum core to evenly control the heat throughout the whole roller to prevent hot spots so your volume and curls last whole day.
The tray takes about three minutes to heat up the rubber grips on the sides of each roller stay cool and safe to touch without burning your fingers. The included clips have asymmetrical teeth that allow them to hold the rollers firmly in place. It is enough to hold the rollers for about ten minutes for a huge volume, but for more defined waves, keep them in until they completely cool off.
It also comes with a safety feature that shuts the heat off after the rollers have been turned on for 60 minutes.
6. Bed Head Roll Call Bubble Hair Setter
This set contains 10 bubble shaped rollers in two sizes – five medium and five large as well as ten color coded butterfly clips.
The design is really youthful and fun and this is definitely something I would like to have in my bathroom. Larger bubble rollers are pink while medium ones are purple and they all come with turquoise butterfly clips on a turquoise container, plus there is a purple storage pouch. I don’t know about you but when I see something this colorful that looks fun I just want to use it right away, so well done designers!
What rollers with this shape can do for you is create loose waves and tousled texture but there is still a plenty of room for creativity because you can achieve different looks depending just on for how long you leave them in or by changing a rolling technique.
The rollers heat up and curl up your hair quite fast without any frizz unless you use a brush. To separate curls and loosen up the hair a bit after you take the rollers out, just use your fingers, you won’t even need a brush.
If you think that waves and curls made with these rollers, you are very wrong. They can last even for two days, depending on your hair. So, even though this is the last product on our list, it definitely isn’t the least.
What Types of Hair Rollers Exist?
Once that vintage made its comeback many things became associated with both skinny models on runways and grannies in soft and comfortable nightgowns, but the only beauty product they have in common are hair rollers. Right?
There are many different types of hair rollers that can help you set your curls and give you different curled effects. When I say many I mean exactly eleven.
These plastic hair rollers with a Velcro pad attached to the top create big, Hollywood voluminous hair while setting your curls, so if the volume is what you are looking for, this is probably the best choice for you. The curls made with this kind of rollers are strong and can last for hours.
This is what to use if you want to create ringlets. What I love the most about them is that they are very flexible, can bend into any shape and stay in place without pins or clips. All you need to do to create a perfect curl is to prep your hair with some kind hair product that increases curling and tightens the curls like a curl cream, gel, or mousse and roll up a small section of hair vertically from end to root.
If you prefer curling your hair while asleep these are ideal for you. It is more than obvious that this type of rollers is made of foam and usually each of them contains the outer clip that holds the hair rolled on while you toss and turn in bed. However, these clips can make you feel a little uncomfortable while asleep so I always recommend those without the clip assembled to them so that you can fix your hair with pins that won’t bother you as much.
*Hairstylists recommend using them on slightly wet hair that will dry all curled up creating natural looking curls.
Using steamrollers is the most gentle, safe way of using heat for hair styling and you can get a variety of different types of curls. You just heat one roller at a time for just a few seconds over the steamer and roll your hair on it before it cools off. These are really easy to use and create curls that will last long.
Hot rollers are my favorite because they create super strong curls super quickly. What’s really great about these is that you can create completely different hairstyles with just using different size of the rollers and ways of rolling your hair. A hot roller kit usually comes with a container that actually heats them and rollers of different sizes, so yes you basically get everything for a variety of different looks in one kit. They are also instant heat which is great for all of us who are constantly in a hurry.
These are ideal for creating defined spirals if you have short or medium-length hair, especially if you have natural texture. These are very easy to use: prep the dry hair with a curl cream or similar product and wrap small sections of hair (previously mist with water) around the cold-wave rod from ends to roots. To secure it use the elastic on one end of the rod. This process takes a little longer because after you wound up all of your hair, you should let it set in until it’s fully dry and that could take hours, so I recommend using a blow dryer to speed up the process.
These were really popular back in the 50s’ when they’ve been called Spoolies or button curlers. Today they are Peco Rollers or nipple curlers. Too many names for a thing that can do just one thing, and not even well enough.Peco rollers are supposed to create loose curls or defined spirals on a dry hair, but in my experience, that’s only possible on a really thin hair.
These were probably your first curlers ever. I remember getting my first pack back in primary school and I even remember how happy I was. These really do create beautiful curls in the safest way possible. There is absolutely no way that you could hurt yourself or damage your hair while using them so if you have a daughter this might be the perfect present for any occasion.
Take a small section of damp hair and pull it through the ribbon and repeat until your entire head is curled. That’s actually all you have to do. Then just leave it until its completely dry (ideally overnight) or use a blow dryer to speed the process.
These hair rollers are made for lazy Sundays. You can apply them however you want and just hang out like that. If you forget to take them out before sleep, that’s ok too, because they are so soft that you won’t even notice them. You have a lot of creative freedom when it comes to curling hair, but in the end, each curl ends up a little frizzy. So, unless you want those messy natural looking curls, you should avoid these.
These are great for those with less experience in styling their own hair. They are very easy to use because of their easy magnetic snap closure feature. Ease of use isn’t the only reason to try them out because the curls aren’t that bad either.
These rollers easily provide the salon blowout effect. The bristles on the surface of each roller tighten your hair and prevent from falling out and also keep it smooth at the same time. The only downside to this curling method is that it takes a couple of hours to create the perfect curl and I wouldn’t recommend blow-drying to speed up the process because it could cause frizz in this case.
How To Use Hot Rollers?
Using hot rollers and rolling your hair onto them isn’t much of a science, but if you roll them sloppy you can get a messy hairstyle. If that happens, why bother using hot rollers, right?
Now, I will guide you through all the steps (there, aren’t many, don’t worry) and explain to you exactly how to apply them.
Divide and clip your hair into four sections (over ears, on the back and on the top of the head). Apply some kind of hair product that will protect your hair from the heat, like Argan oil. Start with the section on top of your head, by dividing it further to even smaller sections.
Take the amount of hair (from the top of your head) that you want to make the curl out of. Basically, the bigger the curl you desire to create, the more the hair you should roll on one roller. Just be careful and don’t toll too much hair on one because you will end up disappointed.
So, now that you divided the amount of the hair you want to roll (make sure that the first one is the closest to the hairline) pull it straight up and place a roller under the hair just a few inches from the ends. Roll them towards your head, still straightened and pulled away from your face, and pin or clip each one into the place in the end.
In order to avoid messy ends, tuck them in after two full rotations and continue rolling.
Repeat the process until you roll all of your hair on all of the rollers and leave them in for about twenty minutes or as long as they need to completely cool off. In the meantime, you can do your makeup or a lot of chores around the house, but whatever you do, do not take them out until they are completely cool.
Once they are all cooled off, take the rollers out by unrolling them one at a time, starting at the back of the head and moving forward. You can use your fingers to brush the curls a little, but do not brush them with an actual brush because that will destroy the texture and definition of the waves or curls. You can use a light hairspray to maintain the bounce during the whole day.
How to Choose the Right Set of Hot Rollers For Your Hair – Buyer’s Guide
There are a lot of different hot rollers on the market, but they all basically have similar features. What you should focus on while deciding on one is your hair type and the style you’d like to create. While one is great for one hair type it could completely damage another and vice versa.
If you have thin hair that prone to split ends and frizz you should look for ceramic rollers or, even better, the combination of tourmaline and ceramic because these materials heat your hair from the inside, so the outside stays silky. A good combination for healthy hair is also infrared and ionic technology, primarily because it doesn’t have to get as hot as some other types of materials need to be in order to curl your hair.
The materials that heat the hair from the outside tend to break your hair and create split ends and I believe you don’t want that. So no matter how thick your hair is, make sure to use the best possible materials on your hair, especially when the heating is included.
This is important primarily to those with thick hair because they need more rollers. If you are one of those people you can imagine how annoyed you would be with a set that includes only eight rollers, or less.
Size of rollers determines the size of the curl along with the amount of the hair rolled on it. In order to be able to play with differently sized curls and to create different styles, you would need the set with more than one size of rollers.
More sizes are especially helpful for those who have layered hair. Layered or not, if your hair is shorter than the shoulder length, you should go for the rollers with a small diameter for the best result.
The best rollers heat up quickly and that is the fact, but don’t let anyone fool you by saying that some rollers heat up within 80 or 90 seconds. One of the quickest heating rollers heat up within five minutes and that’s like super quick.
Although, if there is a roller that can heat up faster, take a minute and think about what kind of damage it can cause to your hair.
Then, you should also consider the time it takes for the rollers to cool off before taking them out. And let me just tell you, if it takes more than twenty minutes, that’s just too long.
If you have thick hair, rollers with just one temperature setting are completely fine for you, but for those with fine, thin hair, multiple temperature settings are one of the most important features.
There are some hot rollers with low, medium, and high-temperature settings, but there are also some that allow you to set the temperature to different degrees. These different settings can also be helpful for those with layered hair or hair that has been treated with color or some other chemical processes.
