The subwoofer is a speaker that produces low frequencies. But that is not the first thing that comes to mind when you say ‘subwoofer’, the first thing that people think of is the hard-hitting, window shaking bass. Even though that is not a wrong opinion, there is a lot more to a subwoofer than just a thumping bass and if you’re interested you can read more about it here.
Top 8 List of 10 Inch Subwoofer Reviews:
We’ve compiled a hand-picked list of top subwoofers. The list is based on our author’s objective review and combination of various opinions from users all over the world.
1. Rockford Fosgate P3D4 – 10 P3 Punch Subwoofer
Everyone who is interested in car audio systems knows about Rockford Fosgate.
Rockford Fosgate P3D4 P3 Punch is packed with features that will raise your car audio experience to another level.
Firstly, Rockford Fosgate P3D4 uses anodized aluminum voice coil formers, which act as a heat sink to provide better heat dispersion. The dust caps are also made out of the same materials, and this whole setting ensures the durability and longevity of the subwoofer. Another thing that helps with the cooling of the subwoofer is the StampCast basket combined with spider ventilation system.
When it comes to mounting, basket features proprietary Flexi Fit design which allows you flexibility in adjusting the angle of the subwoofer, even if it is already mounted. The only bad side of this is the possibility of the subwoofer moving around a bit because the screws might get loose. But if something like that happens there is no need for worry, they won’t get damaged because these subwoofers come with additional aluminum grille to ensure safety.
This Rockford Fosgate model is built with innovative VAST technology (Vertical Attach Surround Technique). This design increases the radiating cone area up to 25%, which means that the Rockford Fosgate P3D4 can push more air for bigger bass.
Rockford Fosgate P3D4 P3 Punch has an exceptional power, it delivers 500 watts continuous power handling with a peak of 1000 watts. This means you can push Rockford Fosgate harder without experiencing damage.
This subwoofer is going to deliver loud, powerful bass, but when you push the speakers to their maximum, you’ll experience some distortion. As for the quality of the audio, bass notes are not that clearly defined and well rounded.
If you want to get the best out of a Rockford Fosgate P3D4 P3 Punch, install it into a larger enclosure with a volume of 1.75 to maybe 2.0 cubic feet.
2. Polk Audio db1040 10-Inch Single Voice Coil Subwoofer
For those who want a well-built subwoofer that also features clean and sophisticated look, you should take a closer look at the Polk Audio db1040.
Polk Audio has been bringing us amazing sound for an affordable price since 1972, and db1040 is a prime example of that.
The first thing we have to mention is that Polk Audio’s db1040 is not a regular type of subwoofer, it is marine-certified. This means that db1040 is built to withstand some of the toughest environments. So, if you’re an owner of a boat or a terrain vehicle, you can easily mount this woofer and not give it a second thought.
The cone is made of polypropylene, it is durable but not stiff, and it offers a little bit of flexibility. The rigid ABS dust cap is also there to ensure better mechanical stability and minimum distortion. The surround is made of a durable Santoprene rubber. Due to the materials used to make this subwoofer, and due to the rigorous product testing, Polk Audio has made sure that you’ll get long-lasting performance.
Polk Audio’s db1040 is not meant to handle a lot of power. This is a single voice coil subwoofer with continuous power handling of 270 watts and peak power handling of 540 watts. However, because this is a single voice coil speaker, it means that it can easily be combined with multiple voice coil woofers to achieve various impedance settings that will personally suit you.
Frequency response goes from 28 to 200 Hz, and sensitivity is rated at 86 dB. This subwoofer is powerful in its class unlike others which are considered to be “mid bass cabinets” (60 to 160 Hz) as they are too small to produce bass within 30 – 59 Hz range.
Polk Audio db1040 is easily installed, it will take you maybe up to an hour. Just follow the instruction manual, and you won’t have a problem. It can be mounted in to sealed, ported, and bandpass enclosures. If you want an extended bass response, it is best to mount it in a well-designed port enclosure.
Overall, db1040 is a durable subwoofer that gives you true and smooth bass sound.
3. Pioneer TS-W254R Component Subwoofer
Pioneer is one of the most known brands in the industry and has always made high quality products for a very reasonable price. And Pioneer TS-W254R Component Subwoofer perfectly fits in that description.
The cone is made out of Injection Molded Polypropylene (IMPP) which provides strength, firmness, and resistance while producing crystal clear and amazingly deep bass. Also, Pioneer TS-W254R uses 6-layer copper voice coil, and copper is much better conductor than aluminum.
The cone is amazingly designed to keep the distortion at a minimum, and because of the Urethane surround, this subwoofer sounds greater than most subwoofers in the same price point.
Overheating won’t be a problem with Pioneer TS-W254R because of the extra venting that allows greater air flow.
The beautiful look of this subwoofer will complement the look of every car.
Pioneer TS-W254R is not a particularly loud subwoofer, but the sound coming out of it is magnificently clear and tight, you would be amazed. It can handle up to 1100 watts of peak power, and 300 watts of continuous power handling. As you can see it can handle a lot of power, but it is not recommended to push it that far. This is a subwoofer for people who want accuracy and clear, beautiful sound. Pioneer TS-W2354R is not for those who are looking for a subwoofer that will shake your car windows.
To get the best sound of Pioneer TS-W254R mount it in enclosed box with volume around 0.65 to 1.25 cubic feet. And in case you want to up the sound a little bit more, add a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 400 watts.
This audio setting will let you experience music in your car like you never had before. Clean sound without distortion, and yet punchy as it should be.
4. BOSS Audio CXX10 800 Watt, 10 Inch, Single 4 Ohm Voice Coil Subwoofer
If you want to go with an even cheaper subwoofer than our previous pick, you should definitely get the BOSS Audio’s CXX10.
Boss Audio has been producing and innovating audio and video products for over 30 years. As they say, they’ve been audiophiles at heart from the very start, and you can clearly see that that is true by the quality of their products.
Before we get into the specifications and overall review, we have to mention that this subwoofer needs to go through a ‘break-in’ process. It doesn’t matter what kind of subwoofer you get or any other speaker truly, they all have to go through a break-in process, but for BOSS Audio CXX10 this is mandatory. Break-in process involves running a subwoofer in a low to medium volume levels for a few hours. Usually, 3 to 4 hours is enough for the subwoofer’s suspension to loosen and prevent possible overheating and failure. If the subwoofer is not properly broken in, and pushed to maximum volume levels, it may easily get damaged and perform poorly. Also, break-in process will prolong the subwoofer’s life span.
Now, a little bit more about the specs. BOSS Audio CXX10 has a resonant frequency of 36 Hz, which is limited, but when it’s compared to your pre-installed factory unit, this frequency range sounds very appealing. The sensitivity is rated at 86 dB, same as Planet Audio’s AC10D. As we mentioned, this is not ideal, but considering the price you’re paying, you’re going to be an immensely satisfied customer.
BOSS Audio CXX10 utilizes a single copper voice coil. When it comes to voice coil material, copper would not be our first choice. Yes, copper is a great conductor, but it also weighs more than aluminum, and it needs more power to reach the same sensitivity of the woofer. Having a single voice coil subwoofer is great if you want some variations. CXX10 can be excellent for combining with more single voice coil subwoofers. Again, at this price range, and overall CXX10’s capabilities, this is a great deal.
With the continuous power of 400 Watts, and 800 Watts peak power handling CXX10 won’t be able to shake up your car and give you a thunderous bass, because this is a single voice coil subwoofer. Even though you won’t get window-shaking bass, you will be able to enjoy clean, crisp, and fairly powerful bass.
The cone is made of Propylene, a durable plastic that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. The surround is made of Butyl Rubber, which is a great material because it can resist and endure a lot of high-tension stress.
When it comes to the enclosure, CXX10 is designed to work marvelously in medium-sized sealed or ported enclosure.
Overall, BOSS Audio CXX10 is a great subwoofer that comes with a cheap price tag, and delivers crisp and clear bass.
5. Planet Audio AC10D 1500 Watt, Dual 4 Voice Coil Ohm 10-Inch Subwoofer
If you’re looking for something that can handle a lot of power, but you’re not ready to pay the premium price, look no further – Planet Audio AC10D is the subwoofer you want and need.
Priced at just fewer than 35 bucks, this compact subwoofer packs a powerful punch. With 750W RMS power handling and a 1500W peak power handling, you can rest assured that Planet Audio AC10D is capable of some massive sound production.
The ideal sensitivity range for a car subwoofer is between 89 and 95 dB, and unfortunately, Planet Audio’s AC10D is not rated as such. However, for this price range, a sensitivity rating of 87 dB sounds pretty amazing.
AC10D is a dual voice coil subwoofer. Some vendors might tell you that dual voice coil subwoofer is able to produce more bass than a single voice coil subwoofer, which is not true. Dual voice coil subwoofer provides more wiring options, meaning that if you along the way decide to add another subwoofer to your car audio system, you won’t have any problems matching the wiring to optimize the amplifier power output.
This subwoofer utilizes dual 2-inch aluminum voice coil. Aluminum is not as great of a conductor as copper, but it is much lighter, and it is amazing at power handling. Aluminum will perform greatly under stress in both high tension and high compression settings, making it a perfect material for voice coil.
The cone is made of Polypropylene, which is a resilient, firm and very durable material. This means that you don’t have to worry about having to change your car subwoofer every few years. The surround is made out of foam, and contrary to some people’s opinion, the foam nowadays is made to last a very long time, to be exact their life span can be from 8 to 16 years. Foam is a great surround for subwoofers because of its ability to control the movement of the cone. Aside from self-damping, the foam is also very light, meaning that it has almost no effect on cone movement, and it’s able to reduce its own standing waves.
What’s amazing about Planet Audio’s AC10D is the fact that it is designed to work in both sealed and ported enclosure. If you’re the person that wants tight and precise bass, you should mount this subwoofer in a sealed enclosure. You can easily build your own enclosure, or you can buy a pre-fabricated one. On the other hand, if you want a powerful bass to fill your car, you should mount the AC10D in a ported enclosure.
With over 400 customer reviews on Amazon.com, Planet Audio AC10D managed to get an amazing rating of 3.8 stars. This only serves as a testimony that this is a very well-made subwoofer that produces an accurate and powerful bass with no distortion. In addition to everything, AC10D is covered by a 3-year Platinum Dealer Warranty.
6. JL Audio 10W3v3-4 10 inch Single Subwoofer
Among audiophiles, JL Audio takes place at the top, and for good reasons.
Mineral-filled polypropylene cone mounted within a nitrile-butylene rubber surround delivers rich and deep bass, setting a standard for what high quality actually means. JL Audio has patented an FCAM technology (Floating Cone Attach Method) for better excursion control and voice coil alignment.
JL Audio’s basket has a higher level of cooling abilities due to Elevated Frame Cooling design. EFC basket reduces heat by exposing voice coil to a larger amount of air flow, and better air flow means better power handling and better sound quality. Another thing that helps with the cooling is Vented Reinforcement Collar, which also helps with stability and rigidity of the cone and voice coil junction.
Dynamic Motor Analysis system delivers unbelievable sound and decreases distortion trough out the range.
JL Audio 10W3v3-4 offers 600 watts of peak power handling, and 300 watts of continuous power handling. Even though it offers 600 watts of power, it is not recommended to push it that far for continuous time. JL Audio is not meant for load, rattling bass, it is meant for people who love the crispy clean sound of the bass.
Installation is a breeze, it will only take you maybe twenty minutes to completely mount it. Just follow the manual instructions.
I know that many are not interested in the look of the subwoofer, but when we talk about JL Audio, the looks just have to be mentioned. Your car will only look more beautiful with this modern and elegant subwoofer installed in it.
JL Audio 10W3v3-4 is made to last, with high quality materials and patented technologies you shouldn’t worry about it breaking over time. Just treat it nicely!
This is a perfect solution for people who want to hear clear, high quality audio while driving down the road.
7. Infinity Reference 1062w 10-Inch
Ranked #7 by the editor
Amazon rating: No products found.
(based on No products found. reviews)
When it comes to Infinity Reference 1062w, it doesn’t matter what kind of music you like to listen. This subwoofer’s bass sounds amazing in every genre.
Infinity Reference 1062w’s cone is made out of polypropylene, a lightweight but stiff material that delivers low end bass even at high decibels. Due to this material, bass notes are reproduced with clarity and detail on both ends of the range, whether that would be thunderous, punchy bass or more of subtle bass notes. Another thing that adds to this well rounded, clear sound that is free of distortion is the large-roll rubber surrounds. These durable rubber surrounds sustain optimum cone to edge suspension, absorb distortion that may travel up the cone, and provide clean, punchy bass.
There is one thing that can damage your subwoofers beyond repair, and that is heat. Infinity Reference 1062w keeps the heat down with large, dual two inch voice coils. Their size gives more surface area for heat dissipation, which results in durability and longevity of the subwoofer.
Another important thing is to keep the overall control of the cone, and keeping voice coils moving as linearly as possible. That’s where the Progressive Spiders come to shine. Progressive Spiders is a material woven under the cone, and this material keeps the optimal control of the entire subwoofer cone.
Infinity Reference 1062w can handle up to 1100 watts of peak power, and a 300 watts of continuous power.
Infinity Reference 1062w is easily mounted, it can be installed in a sealed or vented box. If you want to experience most accurate bass, that will sound crispy clear, you should mount the Infinity Reference 1062w in an enclosed box with a volume of 2.0 cubic feet. You could also add a subwoofer amplifier to spice up your game, but you will be satisfied even without the amplifier.
Overall this is a great performing subwoofer that will make your ride more enjoyable.
8. Kicker 10C104 Comp 10 inch Subwoofer
Ranked #8 by the editor
Amazon rating: No products found.
(based on No products found. reviews)
Kicker 10C104 Comp is an excellent investment that will last you through the years.
Kicker Comp is a durable subwoofer made to last for a long time. It features injection molded, super rigid cone made out of polypropylene with a 360-degree back bracing. This prevents any distortion and brings you clear sound.
The ribbed foam surround increases the surface area, and provides the perfect balance and durability. Surround has yellow double stitching, which is both beautiful and strong.
Heat is always something we need to think about, and Kicker Comp thought that trough thoroughly. Kicker Comp is equipped with high temperature voice coil, vented pole for better heat dissipation, and strong steel basket with coil cooling perimeter venting. All these things combined keep the Kicker Comp cool, even after hours of continuous performance. However, try not to push it to extremes because this is single coil system.
Kicker Comp is compatible with different types of subwoofer boxes, which allows you to install it however you please, in a vented, sealed or free-air box.
When it comes to power, Kicker Comp can handle only 300 watts of peak power, and 150 watts of continuous power handling. I know, some of you might think that this is not enough power, but you don’t always need a woofer that will rattle your windows.
If you’re interested in a durable subwoofer that can push some bass nicely, Kicker 10C104 Comp would be a perfect choice.
How Do Subwoofers Work?
The subwoofer is a speaker that produces low frequencies. But that is not the first thing that comes to mind when you say ‘subwoofer’, the first thing that people think of is the hard-hitting, window shaking bass. Even though that is not a wrong opinion, there is a lot more to a subwoofer than just a thumping bass.
The quality of the audio system measures in its ability to hit all frequencies accurately, both low and high. Car speakers are usually small, and they have troubles hitting low frequencies, that is the reason why music in your car lacks depth. If your car speakers can produce low-frequencies sound, it will most likely sound distorted because the sound is too powerful.
Distortion can damage your speakers if you push them that hard too often. So, having a good subwoofer can help you with all these problems, and improve your overall listening experience.
What Types of Car Subwoofers Exist?
Car Subwoofers Come In Four Different Types:
1. Vehicle-specific Subwoofers:
If you’re looking for something that won’t require you trying to be handy, the Vehicle-specific subwoofer is the best solution. These subwoofers are mounted into a pre-made enclosure that is designed for the particular car model so learning where so you can put your subwoofer anywhere you want while keeping the spread of sound great. Also, they are made to match the interior of the car. The downside to these subwoofers, they are not producing big, loud bass.
3. Enclosed Subwoofers:
These are a great option if you’re looking for something convenient that will save you some time. Enclosed subwoofers are already mounted into a perfect enclosure for said subwoofer. You will need an amplifier to power it, though. The downside to enclosed subwoofers is the reduced choice options.
2. Powered Subwoofers:
These subwoofers are mounted in a compact enclosure and powered by an amplifier. Powered subwoofers sound great, and they are effective when it comes to producing bass. However, as they are mounted into a compact enclosure, they don’t have a lot of power to produce window shaking bass.
4. Component Subwoofers:
These are the subwoofers we covered in this article. They are just the speaker itself, without enclosure or amplifier, you are the one who pick out both the enclosure and the amplifier. The component subs come in different sizes, varying from 8 inches to 15 inches, and you can choose from a pretty wide variety of subs. These are perfect if you want to personalize your car stereo system.
How to Choose the Best Car Subwoofer – Buyer’s Guide
Before reading reviews and trying to make the best possible decision, you need to know some important things about subwoofers. Here are some important factors to consider.
8 Important Things to Consider When Buying a Subwoofer
1. The Size of the Woofer:
Subwoofers come in sizes varying from 8 inches to 15 inches. In theory, larger subwoofers produce louder bass. However, size is not the only factor when it comes to performance, so don’t undervalue the small-sized subs. You should think about the available space for placing the subwoofer.
Sensitivity rating, type of enclosure and power handling capability also greatly impact the performance. Every subwoofer can produce amazing sound if it is positioned well, and powered well. But if you want something that will shake your car, you should go for the bigger-sized woofer.
2. Sensitivity Rating:
This is how we measure the capacity of the subwoofer to convert power into the volume. When subs have higher sensitivity rating number, it means that they need less power to produce the loud, big sound without compromising quality.
3. Type of Enclosure:
Enclosure type plays a big role in how subwoofer sounds. If you want your woofer to sound as loud as possible, mount it into a vented enclosure because this type of enclosure has better air flow which results in more sound with less power. On the other side, if you prefer the accurate and tight sound, the sub should be mounted into a sealed enclosure. However, sealed enclosure needs more power to produce the same volume as vented enclosure.
4. Power Handling:
The two most important ratings are Continuous power handling (RMS) and peak power handling. Peak power is important, but RMS power is the one you need to pay more attention to. RMS represents how much power a subwoofer can handle continuously for long periods of time. Peak power handling tells you how much power a subwoofer can handle for short periods of time, so try not to base your choice on that number.
This is the effective resistance of an electric circuit to the current flow, and it is measured in ohms. Most subwoofers are rated at 4 Ohm impedance, but there some subwoofers rated at 2 Ohms and 8 Ohms. One more thing is very important, a subwoofer and an amplifier both need to have the same impedance rating in order to work when combined.
6. A Number of Voice Coils:
We have two options, single voice coil subwoofers, and dual voice coil subwoofers. Dual voice coils are more flexible when it comes to wiring systems, but most subwoofers have a single voice coil.
7. Frequency Range:
This tells you how low a subwoofer can play. However, this number is not meant to be taken as is, because performance of the subwoofer depends on other important factors.
8. The Price:
Set a budget before going after a subwoofer. This is very important because when you’re buying a component subwoofer, you also have to buy an amplifier and an enclosure. Have that in mind
Now, when you have all the information you need to make a perfect choice, you just have to ask yourself what kind of sound you want in your car and how much money are you willing to spend.
Answers to those two questions will lead you to the subwoofer suited for you. No matter what subwoofer you settle on, you won’t regret buying any subwoofer from our list. Every single one is proven to deliver beautiful sound if it’s installed correctly.
I hope this was helpful, happy shopping and enjoy your next ride!
